Mooimakers, a Flemish initiative by Fost Plus, OVAM, and VVSG, wanted to raise awareness around littering and offer citizens an easy way to take action. They were looking for a digital solution that could both engage volunteers and support city services in tackling street waste. We developed a Flutter app that connects citizens and technical teams, encourages community building, and streamlines the clean-up process.

Challenge

Connecting volunteers and municipalities to fight litter more efficiently.

Mooimakers was looking for a smart way to mobilize volunteers and offer their technical teams a tool to manage street waste more effectively. Existing efforts to report and collect litter were fragmented. Citizens had no feedback loop after reporting, and municipalities lacked live tracking to optimize clean-up operations. On top of that, Mooimakers wanted to activate people physically by combining litter collection with activities like jogging or dog walking, also known as “plogging.”

The solution

A user-friendly app that turns plogging into a shared mission.

We developed a cross-platform application that empowers citizens to log their clean-up efforts while jogging, walking, or biking. Large items can be flagged for pick-up, with images and live geolocation passed on to local services. Our update introduced group features, turning clean-ups into fun community events. The result? A win-win solution that makes litter picking feel rewarding, both socially and physically.

Our approach

Agile development with strong cross-company collaboration.

To bring this project to life, we worked alongside multiple partners. Minsky handled the back end and portal, while Studio Lastpak coordinated the overall UX and UI. At icapps, we focused on the mobile front end using Flutter and relied on our existing component library to speed up development.

We followed an agile workflow with weekly stand-ups and close collaboration across teams. Transparency and open communication proved to be the foundation for a smooth and enjoyable partnership.

Communication as a key successfactor

Minsky is responsible for the back end and web portal development. Studio Lastpak is the partner for the UX & UI design, and responsible for the overall coordination of the project. Since we had to join forces with multiple companies to create a successful application, we instantly noticed that communication was key. With an agile mindset, we were able to align the various stakeholders quickly and set up weekly meetings to talk the project through. Open communication and transparency were appreciated both by the customer and the other parties involved. This resulted in a pleasant collaboration with all parties involved.

We get such a "high" from walking in the park and collecting litter that we made it into our daily teambuilding moment.
