An interview with Office Manager Anja
What’s your role in the icapps team?
As Office manager I’m in touch with all people at icapps, and that’s quite a bunch! We’re over 50 employees now, with some working at the HQ and others at our clients’ offices. But I know them all, being the central contact point for everyone’s practical and administrative questions. We’re out of coffee! How many days of vacation do I have left? Can I work from home, and how does that work practically? Everyone’s response: check with Anja ;-)

What’s it like working at icapps?
There is a very pleasant, open atmosphere here at icapps. Before this I worked in the shipping industry, so this is entirely new for me. It kind of feels like working at a cool startup, but at the same time you can notice that the company is very mature. It was founded in 2009 and today the list of companies and organizations we work with is pretty impressive. But back to the atmosphere, it’s great! Everyone has a very positive spirit. We always have lunch together and there are regular after-work drinks. Even though many of my colleagues have a technical background and conversation sometimes gets a little too techy, we often just talk about everyday life, holidays, weekend activities, and there’s a lot of messing around. People in our office sometimes act a little crazy, and I love it ;)
And do they get any work done?
Haha, of course! Everyone’s always busy, there’s no time to get bored around here. But even though they’ve all got their own work and responsibilities, everyone is also really helpful. If you have a question, just post it on Slack, and immediately people will offer their help. This is another thing worth mentioning: icapps loves Slack. I have to admit, it’s really practical. If you want to dive into your work and not be disturbed, you just put your status to busy. You’re not bothered by phone calls or people calling your name, and when you take a break you read your chat messages at your own time.

Is this startup atmosphere promoted by the management team?
Definitely. icapps employees get a lot of freedom. This of course means that you have to learn and feel for yourself where the boundaries are, what is acceptable and what isn’t. And this works very well: when people have freedom and when they feel that they are trusted, they spontaneously take up their responsibility. It also really encourages entrepreneurship, people come up with new ideas, they really think along. I think that’s something many people are looking for in a job, so this may be one of the perks people are drawn to at icapps.
Apart from this freedom, icapps also really pampers its employees. If there is an interesting event in Belgium or abroad, and employees have a good reason why to attend, this is arranged for them. The management is interested in how everyone feels, whether they are happy in their current position and how they want to evolve in the future. We also have flexible hours and several benefits such as a smartphone and laptop. But also many ‘small’ things that - combined together - make this a pretty awesome workplace! There are food deliveries for employees, we get gifts or treats for Sinterklaas or Christmas and there is budget for team activities, including memorable team weekends.
